Master Thesis, 30 HP: Cross coupling in a 2-axis control system for stabilized platforms at Saab AB

Description of the master thesis

Military sights, like fire control sights for naval applications, or sights for tanks and armoured vehicles are normally space stabilized trough feedback with the aid of rate gyros or similar sensors.

A typical sight system has two orthogonal axis called Azimuth (or training) and Elevation. In many cases these two axis are considered independent and thus treated as two SISO (Single Input Single Output) Systems. This simplification, although the systems in reality are dependent of each other, is often justified because the gain in simplicity (implicitly cost to develop) outweighs the loss in precision and performance for the total servo system.

This master thesis aims for an investigation of a two-axis control system where the student has to finalize three parts:

Develop a method for identification of the cross coupling dynamics in the two axis control system

Based on the identified cross coupling, design at least one suggestion for a controller for the two-axis system.

Implement and test the difference in performance between the MIMO-designed control system and the original control system based on two SISO control loops (in cooperation with personnel from Saab).

The work will be carried out by making measurements on real systems, and the using MATLAB/Simulink for system identification and control design. The work will also imply final implementation on a real sight on a hard real-time operating system.

Your profile

This Master Thesis is suitable for 1 student from the E, F, Y, T (or similar) with specialization in control theory. Recommended courses are Contol theory, basic and advanced/multivariate course.
